Waking up at 4:30 am is almost a forbidden taboo in a city life filled with fussy office routine. But when you are in Andamans, 4:30 am is the magical time to witness the most breath taking view, the bewitching sunrise. The Sun starts off in the eastern sky as a reddish-orange disc emerging from the sea, and one can instantly feel the cool zephyr spreading the tinge all over the place as far as one can see. The otherwise white sand, the blue sea, the green trees, all appear to be dressed up in a rich fabric of red hue. Time passes fast when one is lost in soaking up the color of the sun and before we realize, the sun leaves the sea and reaches the sky hiding behind clouds to bask in a glory of golden yellow, sprouting out a new day, new hopes and new dreams.

The long stretch of white sand beach on the deserted western coast of Havelock Island is a complete package of peace, tranquility and rich marine life. Not more than 50 meters from the shore and into the clear shallow waters one can snorkel through a whole new world of vibrantly colored fish which come in all shapes and with fancy fins. Rare and precious coral reef all along the shore is nature’s way of attiring herself in exotic ornaments.
The virgin forest on the inland is not only a home to exotic species of birds, but also a cradle for the chirping melody that can be constantly heard with a background of the sound of soothing sea waves.

After a hard night’s work of fishing from 1:00 AM, the indefatigable Fishermen from the North Eastern Coast of the Havelock Island return to the shores around 8 AM loaded with fresh stocks of staple food of Andaman Islands, The fish. Then begins the proverbial mayhem of fish-market scenario on the shores with the wives of the fishermen flooding the air waves calling out their competitive price and qualitative catch and Women from the inland can be commonly seen engrossed in bargaining for their staple diet.

Some overly built fish regarded as ‘export-quality’ are shipped to Port Blair for sale and further sold in India, Thailand and other neighboring countries.

Back in the Island the Moolah from the market mayhem is largely invested by the fishermen in lifestyle like local arrack and gambling. The not so penny wise fishermen who do not invest in local lifestyle prefer to spend away the day dozing against the bamboo hut wall along the sea shore, smoking their favorite brand, till the sea calls them again.
